One dead, one badly injured after multiple Gardiner crashes
The Gardiner Expressway was closed Sunday morning between Spadina Avenue and Yonge Street following a series of early-morning accidents that left one man dead and another with life-threatening injuries.
The first of the three accidents occurred at 1:11 a.m. January 28, when a man walking on the westbound lanes was struck by a vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
As police were investigating that accident, a police cruiser at a check point was hit by another vehicle. The officers weren’t in the car, but minor injuries were reported to the woman operating the vehicle.
She was transported to hospital, and failing a breathalizer test, had her license suspended.
Police re-opened the highway, and at 3:47 a.m., a westbound vehicle lost control, striking the guard-rail and hitting the back of a pickup truck.
The driver of the car was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police did not have an update as to his condition.
