Toronto police say child, 3, fighting for life in hospital was not restrained in back seat of vehicle

A three-year-old child who sustained life-threatening injuries in a car accident Saturday morning on Avenue Road was not properly restrained at the time, a police investigation has revealed.

The child and a man were injured just after 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, when the vehicle they were in crashed into a telephone poll at Avenue Road and Roselawn Avenue.

The preliminary investigation is now complete, according to police spokesperson Const. David Hopkinson, and police have determined that the child wasn’t restrained at the time.

Charges could be pending, but police need to determine what the circumstances of the lack of restraint were.

“Was someone at fault or was it a manufacturer’s defect?” Hopkinson said. “These are questions that will decide that.”

Police are not releasing the name of the child or the man injured. The child remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries and the man is in serious condition.
